Choosing a diamond: Diamond certification

Diamond certification tells you the precise grading for each of the 4 C’s: carat, cut, color and clarity. Diamond certification is written proof of a diamond’s attributes, and therefore, of its market value. It allows you to make an informed comparison with other diamonds, often with the help of an expert.

Many diamonds may look the same, but may not be of the same quality. Without diamond certification, you have no assurance that the diamond you are buying is of the quality you’re paying for. Ask to see the diamond certification that will accompany the diamond before you purchase it.

Diamond certificates are issued by independent gemological grading laboratories, such as the International Gemological Institute (IGI); the Gemological Institute of America (GIA); the American Gem Society (AGS); the European Gemological Laboratories (EGL); and GemEx Systems.
